Shoulder Pain and Chiropractic Treatment

What Is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain is achiness, restriction, stiffness, weakness or discomfort in the shoulder area. It can refer into your neck or even cause headaches!

Your shoulder is the most moveable joint in your body. It can move almost 360 degrees! This also makes it the most unstable joint in the body and easy to injure. Because of this, shoulder pain is common and can affect your productivity at work, the quality of your sleep and the enjoyment of your social time.

Chiropractic care at Gentle Family Chiropractic is one way to treat shoulder issues safely and effectively.

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

Muscle strains

An incorrect setup of your desk and workstation (especially if you're working from home) can result in muscles strains in your shoulder. Carrying your purse or bag or baby on the same shoulder/arm will also lead to shoulder pain and pulling. Over time, this can lead to aches, pains and stiffness. Chiropractic adjustments as well as changes to your posture and work setup can help decrease your pain.

Degeneration and Arthritis

Wear and tear on the body is a natural part of aging. This wear and tear also happens to the shoulder joint. With time, the bones of the joint start to degenerate, causing spurs to develop. This can cause reduced shoulder range of motion and pain with movement. Gentle chiropractic adjustments are used to help ease the discomfort of arthritis and degeneration and in some cases, prevent it from getting worse.

Old sports injuries, past car accidents, and even childhood falls can result in chronic shoulder pain that won't go away. Chiropractic adjustments and specific stretches can help eliminate chronic pain.

What are Common Symptoms of Shoulder Pain?

How Does Chiropractic Help Shoulder Pain?

Dr. Maya Pande first talks to you about to your history and assesses your particular case. A thorough examination helps her pinpoint where the problem is and what is causing it. Gentle chiropractic adjustments are then performed, which can help your muscles relax and can improve your range of motion. With adjustments, and specific stretches that are tailored for your unique situation, inflammation is reduced and nerves begin to heal, resulting in a decrease in pain and an improvement in function.

How Long Does It Take to Recover?

Most patients start to feel some improvements within the first few visits but full recovery may take a few months. It depends on a few factors -the cause of your pain, the severity of your symptoms, the length of time you've been suffering, and follow through with appointments. This will be discussed at your first appointment. On your second visit, Dr. Maya Pande will provide you with a detailed, personalized treatment plan so you know what to expect. And if further testing or a referral to another health care professional is recommended, Dr. Maya will discuss that with you.

What Can I Do At Home For Shoulder Pain?

There are a few things you can do at home if you feel your pain is mild.

1. Apply ice to the area of pain or stiffness, especially if it's a new issue or the area is hot or swollen. A frozen bag of peas will work just fine. Wrap the ice in a towel and place it on the painful area for 5-10 minutes. Repeat a few times.

2. If your pain is chronic or long term, apply moist heat. Use a hot water bottle or put uncooked rice in an old, clean sock and tie the end. Microwave (with a mug of water to prevent burning) for 30-60 seconds. Carefully wrap this in a damp towel and place on the area of pain for 5 minutes. Repeat.

3. Gentle range of motion stretches. Gently and slowly rotate in the all the ranges of motions. Don't push too far and stop if it hurts.
