Sciatica and Chiropractic Treatment

What Is Sciatica and the Sciatic Nerve?

Sciatica (sigh-A-ti-ca)is named for the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It travels from your low back, down the back of your thigh, around the front of your shin and into your foot and toes. When this nerve becomes inflamed and painful, you develop sciatica. Because the sciatic nerve goes all the way down your leg, you can feel symptoms at the top of your thigh, all the way to your toes or anywhere in between.

How Does Chiropractic Help Sciatic Pain?

Even though your pain is down your leg, this condition may be caused by misalignments in your low back or even your pelvis. Dr. Maya Pande does a thorough exam to assess your spine and get to the root of the problem. Then, she uses gentle chiropractic adjustments to realign your spine and pelvis, which helps your muscles relax and decrease your pain. Sciatica presents in so many different ways and Dr. Maya makes sure that your treatment plan is made for your particular situation.

How Long Does It Take to Recover?

Most patients start to feel some improvements within the first few visits but full recovery may take a few months. It depends on a few factors -the cause of your pain, the severity of your symptoms, the length of time you've been suffering, and follow through with appointments. This will be discussed at your first appointment. On your second visit, Dr. Maya Pande will provide you with a detailed, personalized treatment plan so you know what to expect. And if further testing or a referral to another health care professional is recommended, Dr. Maya will discuss that with you.

What Can I Do At Home For Sciatica?

There are a few things you can do at home if you feel your pain is mild.

1. Apply ice to the area of pain or stiffness, especially if it's a new issue or the area is hot or swollen. A frozen bag of peas will work just fine. Wrap the ice in a towel and place it on the painful area for 5-10 minutes. Repeat a few times.

2. Gentle stretches. In particular, use the figure 4 stretch. Lay on the ground with your knees bent. Rest the ankle of the hurting leg on your other knee. Grab behind the thigh of the foot that's still on the ground and pull towards you gently. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other leg. Don't push too far and stop if it hurts.

Sciatica Pain Testimonials

I was with my last Chiro for 20 years so I was worried changing to a new one. I’ve been with Maya for over a year now and couldn’t be happier. She has helped me relieve migraine and sciatic pain that I have struggled with since I was a child. Maya is so kind and genuinely cares about her patients and their well-being . I can’t say enough good things about Maya. My son and I are so happy we found her.

B.S.

I was informed that my baby was breech when I was about 32 weeks pregnant. After a few weeks of various yoga poses and inversions, I was coming to terms with the fact that I may have to book a c-section or attempt an ECV. Someone recommended that I go see a chiropractor and I am so glad I listened. I did some research on the Webster technique and found Dr. Pande. After my second appointment with her, baby flipped! She is also helping to treat my sciatic pain. Dr. Pande is very professional, knowledgeable, and kind - I would definitely recommend her
