One Way to Reduce Inflammation

Fish oil capsules good for reducing inflammation

I was talking to a patient today about an injury she has developed. She was icing it, getting adjusted and even staying off of it but it was still persisting. So we talked about decreasing the inflammation with nutrition.

One of the ways to do that is with Omega-3. Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that ISN'T made by the body. It's very important for brain, heart and joint function but needs to be ingested through food or a supplement. Most people don't eat enough fish or other omega rich foods in their diet so taking a fish oil supplement (or a vegetarian/non-fishy alternative like Ovega-3 or algae oil) everyday for at least 6 weeks will help decrease inflammation.

To reduce inflammation, you need about 1800-2400 mg of Omega 3 (NOT Omega 3-6-9) every day. Check the label. One pill should have about 1000 mg of EPA/DHA combined. Good quality supplements make a difference. Drugstore brands don't tend to provide enough.

Why is reducing inflammation important? Inflammation is the cause of disease and sickness. The more you have, the more susceptible you are to getting really sick. In fact, TIME Magazine calls it the secret killer. I call it the silent killer because inflammation is not always linked with pain. You can have inflammation without having any pain at all.

So what causes inflammation? Stress. Do you know who has stress? YOU. (Not to point fingers or anything, but everyone knows you have stress. It's all we talk about during Zoom chats.) If everyone is stressed, then everyone has increased amount of inflammation, which means that everyone needs to take larger amounts of Omega 3/Algae oil on a daily basis.
