What Is Neck Pain?

What Causes Neck Pain?

Muscle strains

Your head weighs about 10 pounds and your neck's job is to hold it up. Poor posture, like when you spend too much time on your phone or computer, can cause the weight of your head to pull on your neck muscles. Over time, this can lead to aches, pains and stiffness. An incorrect setup of your desk and workstation (especially if you're working from home) can result in neck pain as well.  Chiropractic adjustments as well as changes to your posture and work setup can help decrease your pain.

Degeneration and Arthritis

Wear and tear on the body is a natural part of aging. This wear and tear also happens to the joints and discs of the neck. With time the discs, which act as cushions between the bones, start to degenerate, causing the bones to develop spurs. This limits your range of motion and can cause pain when you move. Gentle chiropractic adjustments are used to help ease the discomfort of arthritis and degeneration and in some cases, prevent it from getting worse.

Injuries

Old car accidents, sports injuries and even childhood falls can result in chronic neck pain that won't go away. Chiropractic adjustments and specific stretches can help eliminate chronic pain.

Nerve Pain

When a nerve in the neck is compressed (or pinched) it can lead to numbness, tingling or pain that shoots down the arm or upper mid back. Adjustments from a qualified chiropractor can help the nerve heal eventually removing the symptoms of numbness and tingling.

How Does Chiropractic Help Neck Pain?

Dr. Maya Pande first talks to you about to your history and assesses your particular case. A thorough examination helps her pinpoint where the problem is and what is causing it. Gentle chiropractic adjustments are then performed, which can help your muscles relax and can improve your range of motion. With adjustments, and specific stretches that are tailored for your unique situation, inflammation is reduced and nerves begin to heal, resulting in a decrease in pain and an improvement in function.

How Long Does It Take to Recover?

Most patients start to feel some improvements within the first few visits but full recovery may take a few months. It depends on a few factors -the cause of your pain, the severity of your symptoms, the length of time you've been suffering, and follow through with appointments. This will be discussed at your first appointment. On your second visit, Dr. Maya Pande will provide you with a detailed, personalized treatment plan so you know what to expect. And if further testing or a referral to another health care professional is recommended, Dr. Maya will discuss that with you.

What Can I Do At Home For Neck Pain?

There are a few things you can do at home if you feel your pain is mild.

1. Apply ice to the area of pain or stiffness, especially if it's a new issue or the area is hot or swollen. A frozen bag of peas will work just fine. Wrap the ice in a towel and place it on the painful area for 5-10 minutes. Repeat a few times.

2. If your pain is chronic or long term, apply moist heat. Use a hot water bottle or put uncooked rice in an old, clean sock and tie the end. Microwave (with a mug of water to prevent burning) for 30-60 seconds. Carefully wrap this in a damp towel and place on the area of pain for 5 minutes. Repeat.

3. Decrease cell phone and laptop time. We can strain our necks when using these devices and taking a break can help reduce pain.

4. Gentle range of motion stretches. Gently and slowly bend your head in the all the ranges of motions without rolling your head around. Don't push too far and stop if it hurts.

If your neck is still painful or stiff, please book an appointment for an initial examination today!

Neck Pain Testimonials

Dr. Pande has been wonderful to see for Chiropractic care. Since beginning treatment with Dr. Pande I am no longer suffering from migraines or stiff/kinked neck. I’ve also noticed far less pain between my shoulders and in my lower back. Booking an appointment is super easy. I continue see Dr. Pande regularly and would encourage others to do so as well. Never felt better!

S.C.

I have always been hesitant to see a chiropractor because I don’t like the “cracking” sounds and the adjustments seem to be so aggressive. After trying massage, physiotherapist and acupuncture, but only getting limited results, I decided to try a chiropractor. Dr. Maya Pande’s technique was effective and gentle and has greatly improved my chronic neck pain. I would not hesitate to recommend Gentle Family Chiropractic to anyone looking for relief.
