Chiropractic Care for Low Back Pain
What Is Low Back Pain?
Low back pain is typically found around the waist area and can also extend into the top of the pelvis. Sometimes low back pain is coupled with other symptoms or conditions such as sciatica, menstrual cramps or pregnancy.
Low back pain can vary from mild to crippling. While there are a variety of reasons for low back pain, usually it's because the joints, ligaments and nerves are inflamed. Inflammation builds up and eventually leads to pain. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help reduce that inflammation and decrease pain. This allows you to get back to your life, family and work.
What are Common Symptoms of Low Back Pain?
Low back pain can be very different from person to person. Your discomfort may be mild or crippling. Or you may be suffering from pain that feels dull and achy, or sharp and burning or weak with restricted movement. Or a combination of these. Your low back may 'catch' (your back suddenly gives out) or sometimes your muscles go into spasm or maybe you simply have a tired back at end of the day. All of these are symptoms of low back pain. No matter what kind of symptom you have, Dr. Maya Pande can assess your unique situation and recommend the right care for you.
How Does Chiropractic Help Low Back Pain?
When you first arrive at the office, Dr. Maya Pande will first talk to you about your health and your pain history. Then she performs an examination that helps her determine where your problem actually is and what is causing it. After explaining her findings, gentle chiropractic adjustments will help realign your joints, allowing your muscles to relax and over time, decrease your pain. Adjustments, along with stretches that are personalized for your particular situation, help decrease inflammation and improve your function.
How Long Does It Take to Recover?
It depends on a few factors - what's causing your pain, the severity of your symptoms, the length of time you've been suffering, and follow through with appointments. In general, most patients start to feel some improvements within the first few visits but full recovery may take a few months. All this will be discussed at your first appointment. On your second visit, Dr. Maya Pande will provide you with a detailed, personalized treatment plan so you know what to expect. And if further testing or a referral to another health care professional is recommended, Dr. Maya will discuss that with you.
What Can I Do At Home For Low Back Pain?
There are a few things you can do at home if you feel your pain is mild.
1. Apply ice to the area of pain or stiffness, especially if it's a new issue or the area is hot or swollen. A frozen bag of peas will work just fine. Wrap the ice in a towel and place it on the painful area for 5-10 minutes. Repeat a few times.
2. If your pain is chronic or long term, apply moist heat. Use a hot water bottle or put uncooked rice in an old, clean sock and tie the end. Microwave (with a mug of water to prevent burning) for 30-60 seconds. Carefully wrap this in a damp towel and place on the area of pain for 5 minutes. Repeat.
If your low back is still inflamed and painful, please book an appointment for an initial examination today!
