Ligaments keep your joints in place. As soon as you become pregnant, a hormone named Relaxin starts 'relaxing' your ligaments so that your pelvis can eventually open enough to have your baby. Unfortunately, Relaxin relaxes ALL your ligaments, causing your joints to be less stable. Less stable joints can put pressure on the surrounding nerves and muscles, causing inflammation, aches and pain. Keep in mind, it's not the baby putting pressure on your nerves, it's your bones!
2. Centre of Gravity:
As your baby grows and your weight increases, your centre of gravity shifts. Your belly starts reaching destinations before the rest of you! To make sure you don't fall over, your body has a reflex that naturally shifts your upper body and head back, which increases the curvature of your lumbar spine. This, along with the increased weight of baby, puts more and different pressure on your spine and nerves, causing aches and pains you didn't expect and can make the last trimester of pregnancy particularly challenging.
